Broadband for all to get new rules

by David Allen

If the government gets its own way, new rules could be introduced governing the way that broadband is provided in the UK.

These proposals are being put forward by the communications minister Stephen Carter.

He has plans for a new universal service obligation (USO), which basically means that internet service providers will have to provide a broadband service to anyone who wants it, regardless of their location.

The current rules, which say that every home should have access to landline phone services and dial up internet, really only apply to BT, who has for a long time complained about the obligation being placed on them and not other service providers.

If the new USO is adopted, it could mean that everyone in the UK would get access to broadband services, which would be of particular interest to those in rural areas.
