During the 1930s the US government decided to implement a programme of public works.
This served two purposes as it kept people working and at the same time fixed a lot of the country’s problems.
Could this sort of programme be introduced in the UK, or to be more precise could this principle be applied to bring the UK’s broadband network up to the high standards that users are expecting?
Prime Minister Gordon Brown seems to think so, and he has announced a public investment programme to help Britain weather the recession.
There are many projects, which could be improved by pouring in public money, but the broadband network has wider reaching influence as both businesses and the public use it, therefore improving the broadband network would benefit the entire UK.
There are many figures being placed on the cost of this upgrade, but industry experts claim it could cost as much as £29 billion.
