Spam levels on the rise again

by David Allen

When the US-based hosting company McColo was closed down, the levels of spam being delivered to inboxes fell by as much as seventy per cent, which by any standards had to be a good result.

However, that was back in November and the level of spam being sent out and received is currently at eighty per cent of the all time high levels seen before McColo was closed down.

Most of this increase has occurred since the New Year.

SPAMfighter, a software development and spam research company, believes that spammers will change tactics in 2009.

Meanwhile many of these spammers continue to piggyback on newsletters and other legitimate email to get through.

One the latest events was the recently publicised spamming of Twitter accounts.
