Middle East Problems Increase Computer Attacks

Cyber attacks can potentially affect everyone, but Fortify Software is warning that companies with any connection at all to the Middle East could be at particular risk of an attack, due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

According to Fortify, numerous websites with Middle East connections have been defaced by hacker groups within the region.

Countries hosting these hackers include Lebanon, Iran, Turkey, and Morocco.

The alarming part is that the hackers are no longer reserving their attacks for government sites.

Bruce Jekins is a security expert with Fortify.

He notes that, increasingly, hacker attacks from the region are random and based on mere rumour and speculation. He calls it a “herd mentality.”

For companies who fear they might be at risk, the lesson is clear.

They must ensure that their operating system, IT security and software patches are current and secure.

They should also regularly monitor the company’s computer traffic for suspicious activity.

But, Fortify says, there’s also a lesson for private individuals.

Just as political groups can attack perceived enemies via the Internet, increasingly, cyber-bullies are victimizing people online.

In addition, 60 percent of people report that they have fallen prey to some form of cyber crime, such as identity theft, fraud, phishing, or hacking attempt.

According to one report, half of those who complain that they have been victimized by cyber-fraud are age 60 or older.

Cyber-stalking and harassment are also a problem.

More than 40 percent of people responding to a recent survey said they’d been hurt by damaging remarks posted online.

People who feel they’ve been victimized by cyber crime can go to bytecrime.org.

The website gathers details on computer security issues and also provides free downloadable advice on protecting yourself online.
