Silicon Image, Inc. is heavily involved in secure intellectual property distribution and semiconductors, as well as storage and presentation of HDTV content.
The company has announced the release of a new display processor, the SiI6100 HD.
The new addition will have the capability of bringing together a whole host of devices with seamless connection.
The SiI6100 HD will support LiquidHD technology, which will enable it to connect together any combination of personal computers, TVs, portable media devices, or even home theatres.
This will mean that users will be able to watch all manner of digital content on any of those devices which are hooked together via the LiquidHD.
This new addition will make multi-room deployment of various devices much simpler and more efficient.
This is a whole SoC or system-on-chip that includes HD and standard def video decoding capabilities capable of handling lots of formats, such as MPEG-2 AAC stereo, MPEG-1 Layer 2, Dolby Digital, and DTS 5.1 formats.
The cost of installing multi-room service for video on demand, IPTV and other features is greatly reduced for the service providers and ultimately for the consumer.
Several potential providers have already taken the plunge, such as AT&T in the US which “soft launched” its service, named “whole home”, late last year.
It is yet to be seen if such services are viable for providers and thus affordable for consumers.
Rival Verison is offering multi-room as a free upgrade, but these systems have limited abilities to connect a whole host of devices, something that Silicon Image is presumably banking on.
