Industry to fund broadband for all

A lot has been said about the government’s plans for everyone in the UK to have access to the broadband network by 2012.

This could either be done through the fixed line or even mobile phone network.

A plan is about to be released by the government’s communications minister, Lord Carter, setting out how this is going to happen and who is going to be involved.

There is already an initiative to connect all households with school aged children to the broadband network at a cost of £300 million to the government.

However, the government may not be picking up the bill when it comes to broadband for all.

It is believed that Lord Carter is planning to relieve BT of their universal service obligation, which means that all homes are entitled to have a phone line, with an industry wide obligation to provide broadband for all households.
