After an unexpected problem with its latest satellite, Eutelsat has decided to refuse to take over the craft, due to a serious error with the satellite’s power system.
This satellite was supposed to have gone into service covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as W2M at 16 degrees east.
The satellite was launched just before Christmas but during the manoeuvring stages it developed a fault while it was being positioned into a geosynchronous orbit.
Once this was noticed Eutelsat refused to integrate the satellite into its existing fleet.
The problem is being investigated by EADS Astrium who built the satellite using an Indian Space Research Organisation system.
This satellite will be replaced by satellite W3B which has already been ordered and will be launched in 2010.
