Ofcom ends Freeview’s full HD plans

The free-to-view digital service, Freeview, will not be able to launch a full HD service, as expected, later in the year.

This is because the regulator Ofcom will not allow Freeview to transmit this service in 1080p.

Ofcom has decided that instead of a full HD service, Freeview will have to make do with MPEG4 4.0 compression, or 1080i.

It has to be said that there is not much equipment around in the UK that is compatible with 1080p.

Neither Freesat nor BSkyB will be offering a full 1080p HD service yet and it looks as if Ofcom is not willing to take a chance on a full HD service being rolled out and being a success within a year.
