BT broadband gets Ofcom boost

The telecom regulator Ofcom has indicated that it will not oppose the plan by BT to introduce next gen broadband to around ten million households around the UK.

The investment, which was announced last year, is said to be around £1.5 billion and has been the centre of concern for BT shareholders who want profits before investment.

Yet BT has confirmed that it is committed to the plan.

BT, which is still the largest provider of telecoms and broadband services in the UK, has been trialling fibre optic broadband in several locations in the UK, with the work expected to be completed by 2012.

This will mean that BT will be way behind cable broadband provider Virgin Media, which is expected to be providing nearly half the country with super fast broadband by the end of this year.
