BBC Trust says no to local news

The nail has finally been hammered into the coffin of the BBC’s plans to provide national online video news services, covering local areas.

The BBC Trust’s decision comes several months after the public consultation set up to look into this plan rejected it as being a negative influence on the regional press networks, and said it would not improve the services enough to justify the investment.

The idea was to provide an online news network that covered local news, weather, sport and user generated content.

There would have been around sixty five regional websites covering all areas of the UK, but there are already similar services provided by the regional press, who believed that public funded competition would be unfair.

The BBC Trust appears to have agreed.
