Last year a new format to replace DVD beat off competition from HD DVD to become the high definition video format.
However, after winning such a high profile battle, Blu-ray has not found it that easy in the commercial market; in fact the format, that was set to dominate the market in a similar way to VHS, is actually struggling.
The reason for this bad performance has been blamed on Sky+ and cheap DVD players.
This equipment is so readily available that Blu-ray cannot get a foothold in the market to work from.
There are even issues with the Blu-ray machines as some users complain that they are slow.
Most people with a Sky+ set top box or DVD player do not see the point in switching to a Blu-ray device now or in the immediate future, which should set alarm bells ringing for the format.
