With the switch to digital broadcast, many consumers are rushing to replace their old sets with digitally capable ones. A great set to replace your sputtering old TV is the Samsung 50″ plasma HDTV. This TV marks the end of your days squinting at fuzzy TV artifacts and wrestling with taped-up rabbit-ear antennas.

With this plasma TV, you get 1080 x 1980 screen resolution on a 50″ screen. No more squinting at the TV to make out an image. In fact, the Series 5 PN50A550’s wide 178º viewing angle kind of compares to a drive-in movie experience — no matter where you or your movie-buff friends sit, you see every scene.

Technically, behind that fancy screen beats Samsung’s Digital Natural Image engine (DNle). This technology is made up of a Motion Optimizer, a Contrast Enhancer, a Color Optimizer, and a Detail Enhancer to ensure that all the work going into a clear image keeps humming along — only quietly, thanks to the engine’s noise reduction.

The new 18-bit processing capability of DNIe and the Natural True Color technology allows you to enjoy colors as it is meant to be seen on the PN50A550. From the faint sunlight of dawn to the extreme spotlights of a fashion show, your plasma provides vivid, life-like images that rival reality. ACE Silhouette editor ensures clear images without contour lines.

Burn-in’s are the most critical problem with plasma televisions. However, users don’t have to worry about this as the PN50A55 has a 100,000-hour panel life, so that hypnotic true-to-life picture isn’t fading any time soon. Anti-burn-in technology uses auto pixel shift, a signal pattern processing function, and all-white screens to ensure that no images are burned into your plasma panel.

When it comes to displaying pictures how you want to see them, the PN50A550 gets the job done. Built-in analog tuners allow you to connect with an RF signal cable directly to the set and watch regular standard TV right out of the box, or use the integrated ATSC tuner to pick up high definition programs broadcast over the air. Picture-in-Picture (PIP) gives you convenient simultaneous viewing of TV and video or PC sources. At the same time, the Ultra FilterBright Plus Anti Glare Filter enhances contrast ratio in bright rooms even in the daytime and improves overall brightness for clearer image details.

The PN50A550 includes three HDMI-CEC ver. 1.3 connections which allow for the transmission of both video and audio digital signals through a single cable for higher quality and fewer wires. The HDMI connections are also CEC-compliant, which means one remote can control all the CEC devices with one-touch operation. You can connect your DVD and DTV sources with two component video (Y/Pb/Pr) inputs. You also get S-Video and composite video inputs, along with optical digital audio outputs for transferring high-quality sound. What’s more, the PN50A550 can also function as a PC monitor thanks to PC inputs.

The PN50550 is also 3D-ready. Groundbreaking 3D technology gives you the benefits of both a flat-panel set and 3D movie viewing and gaming. Users can now play their favorite video game on a 50″ screen that has 3D capabilities.

As you now know, with the PN50A550, true theater quality sound is part of the experience. SRS TruSurround XT delivers an amazing simulated effect using TruBass virtual woofer effect, Dialog Clarity, and WOW stereo enhancement. The set’s built-in 2-way speaker system is powered by the built-in 10-watt per channel audio amplifier and sounds terrific.

  1. The picture is magnificent.Setup was a breeze and the “tweaking” is fun. The picture is awesome and the set’s features are incredible. The richness and depth of color and lack of “ghosting” that is so prevalent with LCDs make the choice so obvious. Everything is being run with optical cables through a Samsung 800 watt 5.1 surround sound system.the 550 handles it all so easily and the menu navigation is very intuative.
