Video conferences unpopular in Europe

Video conferencing is not catching on in Europe despite the economic downturn, according to new research by Easynet Global Services.

The benefits of video conferencing are well documented – reduced travel costs, reduced travel time, and lower CO2 emissions, boosting environmental credentials.

However, two-thirds of European businesses have not considered video conferences, Easynet found, despite 87% saying they saw the potential of virtual meetings for saving money.

Nearly a quarter of businesses said video conferences are too impersonal to make for a productive and comfortable meeting.

The cost of equipment needed was another concern, with an additional 25% of businesses worried about the initial outlay, or the time and cost involved in transferring to video conferences.

“Saving money and improving efficiency are common goals for business everywhere, but the potential of video conferencing to help has often been overlooked,” said Denis Planat, Easynet’s chief operating officer.

The survey also found that businesses who have installed the technology often fail to use it to its full potential.

One in five (21%) of businesses who use the technology said it is too complicated.
