There have been many high profile cases where pub and bar owners have been taken to court by Sky TV, Setanta and other interested parties, after they have shown sports events without paying for them.
However, it seems that there may a rebound on those and future cases through the European Court of Justice (EUJ).
The case follows a group of bar owners who say that a decoder card bought in Greece and legally imported into the UK by a distributor does not break the EU laws on pirated decoder cards.
This is because of the EU free trade rules. As Greece is in the EU they say decoder cards should be allowed to be imported and used in the UK.
Should this case not go the way that Sky TV and Setanta would like it to, there could be some very serious implications for these broadcasters when it comes to pubs and clubs showing live sporting events such as Premier League football.
