Fring secures $10m extra funding

Mobile VoIP service Fring has managed to secure around $10 million funding despite not having a business model.

This is the third round of funding given to the start-up, and it says it will use to money to make Fring ‘even more accessible, relevant, and easy to use’.

Updates made with the funding will include support for more platforms, devices, and add-on services created by third party developed.

Android is likely to be one of the key targets for updated compatibility.

Israel-based Fring has now raised $23 million since 2006 from a variety of backers including North Bridge Venture Partners, Pitango Venture Capital, Veritas Venture Partners and VenFin Limited.

Fring is an ad-supported free to download and use mobile VoIP application.

Services available on the app include VoIP calling, instant messaging and social networking.

Fring integrates the log in for social networking communities, including facebook, Twitter, last.fm, Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, GoogleTalk, AIM, and ICQ.

“Our millions of users actively sharing, interacting and communicating over Fring today will benefit greatly as Fring becomes even more accessible to the rest of the mobile world, ready to shift their online social nexus to their mobile phones,” said CEO Avi Shechter.
