Government denies Google tax plan

The government has been quick to deny that it is looking to raise funds from the internet in order to pay for the roll out of next gen broadband and the Digital Britain plan.

The Daily Mail had initially suggested that a tax on search engines, download sites and social networking sites could raise around a £100 million.

This would mean that there would be plenty of cash to fund the projects and have some left over for the BBC perhaps.

However, someone from the Department of Business has stated that the government has no plans for a new tax and in fact it is actually going to use the TV licence fee payer’s cash surplus, which had been ring fenced to help some households with the purchase of equipment for the digital switchover.
