lg-50pg30The LG 50PG30 is one of those inexpensive plasma HDTVs in the market today. Currently, it is priced at about $1700, give or take. It provides users with a stylish set and passable video quality. The overall design and range of inputs makes the LG 50PG30 attractive towards first time plasma HDTV buyers.

In several tests, the LG 50PG30 received different results. It looked very good when viewed at an angle. This is quite common with, and expected of, plasma televisions. The 50PG30 also did a very good job with foreground and background detail. However, the set disappoints during fast-paced action. In this scenario, the TV gives of some motion blur and fuzziness. Other faults include facial tones, flat images, and colors that don’t pop.

The 50PG30 is easy to set up with conveniently placed inputs and a setup wizard that asks whether to optimize for home use or store use. Six large icons form the crux of the on-screen menu. These menus are very intuitive and logical and no doubt first time users won’t have a hard time setting this up.

The Quick Menu offers even easier access to common options such as the set’s picture and sound modes. And the selections that pop up as icons along the bottom of the screen when you press the input button to give top priority to sources that are currently sending a signal to the TV.

These, so far, are the main selling point of this set. What this TV does lack are picture-in-picture functionality, and no USB or SD Card multimedia capabilities. The minimalist remote doesn’t glow in the dark, isn’t programmable; and can control only VCR or DVD players that support LG’s SimpLink (HDMI CEC) interface.

Overall, the LG 50PG30 is a bargain. At this price range, the set produced good quality pictures. It has a very good range of inputs and would satisfy first time plasma HDTV buyers. As a pretty good TV at a very low price, LG’s 50PG30 qualifies as a bargain.
