'Tipping point' for online backup

Online backup has reached a ‘tipping point’ that will see the majority of businesses ditching tape backup in favour of cloud-based solutions within the next three years.

Research by IT specialist Connect found that nearly half (49%) of all companies plan to switch to an online backup service by 2012, whilst a quarter of SMEs have already moved away from tape.

Tape backup is notoriously unreliable, with one in ten UK firms having lost important data because their tape backup system failed

Connect said it no longer recommends tape backup to clients because of its poor reliability.

“It is only over the last 12 months that we have stopped recommending tape solutions as standard for our clients primarily because of the poor reliability of tapes for recovering data,” said Mark MacGregor, Connect CEO.

“The rapid switch to online backup by SMEs shows how willing they are to adopt new technology, despite the current economic downturn.”

He added that the price of online storage has ‘fallen dramatically’ in recent months, making it affordable for even the smallest company.

“These research findings suggest that the tipping point for online backup has been reached and we expect tape users to be in a minority within the next few years,” MacGregor concluded.

As ISP’s start offering better upload speeds you’ll see more companies and consumers start using online backup regularly. Its more important than ever now that most of our data is digital. When choosing an online backup company keep in mind that your upload speed is probably going to be the delimiter on how fast your data gets to that company, and make sure that you have a reputable company such as MyOtherDrive.com or Mozy.
