Visual voicemail simplified and standardised
by David Allen
Visual voicemail is set to be simplified and become more widely available, following new industry specifications adopted by the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP).
The global specifications will allow operators and handset vendors to offer visual voicemail to virtually all customers.
“Reducing fragmentation across the mobile communications industry is an important part of fulfilling our mission to make life better and less complicated for consumers,” said Tim Haysom, OMTP’s chief marketing officer.
“Besides providing consistency and security across all mobile handsets, these recommendations will allow visual voicemail to fulfil its huge mass market potential.”
OMTP was founded in 2004 by eight mobile operators with the aim of simplifying the customer experience of mobile data services. It now has 35 members, including operators, handset manufacturers, chip makers, content providers, and middleware vendors.
