President Barack Obama announced Friday that America has let its lack of Internet security protocols slip for too long, and in the face of economic and security threats he has created a new Government position titled the White House office of Cyber Security.
Obama entitled the current state of Internet security a ‘transformational moment’ due to the face networks in the US are attacked and probed millions of times per day on a regular basis.
The exact title position of the new coordinator for the security office has not yet been announced, but Obama declared he will soon decide on the candidate chosen for the position who will be responsible for reporting to both the National Economic Council and the National Security Council.
Obama has suggested that the coordinator will not be able to enforce new policies or have budget access, but will report to Obama regularly where appropriate action can be taken on a case by case basis.
Concerns of the administration range from cyberspace espionage of which China is a suspect, spam, US networks that are attacked and spammed, and viruses that have been aimed at the Pentagon where national security issues are stored and addressed.
In addition to the new cyber security coordinator, Obama told the US that pope education needs to be provided to citizens and technology fields need to gain emphasis in educational institutions.
Overall however, Obama made it a point to address privacy issues stating that his new cyber security measures will not interfere with the way businesses choose to protect their information and that email accounts of citizens will not be accessed or monitored.
Concerns have been voiced that the current plan of action is not enough, with Rhode Island Rep James Langevin stating that the new coordinator will not have enough power or stance to actually help control current cyber threats.
