TDK has recently announced that it will replace magnetic hard drives with solid state drives (SSD), a move that has been met with some harsh criticism from the British based Origin Storage company.
According to Andy Cordial, the managing director of Origin Storage which is considered a system integration specialist storage organization, SSDs will never be able to completely replace magnetic hard drives due to their lack of longevity and flexibility of their counterparts.
TDK will start by offering a 2.5in version that can hold up to 64GB, which is well behind the current standard of magnetic hard drives that they are informing customers should be replaced.
Cordial went on to state that beyond this fact, magnetic drives still are able to offer better encryption protection to uses than SSDs, which is interesting as it comes in light of recent claims by Origin Storage that businesses are not fully encrypting their data at an accurate level.
Businesses are increasing encryption levels in the wake of data breaches that have occurred in significant numbers throughout the last several years, but Cordial stated that most companies are still using insignificant encryption measures when it comes to low bit levels.
Cordial’s public statements were issued in the wake of the recommendation by the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the US that firms should not use 1024bit RSA encryption after the start of 2010.
