Mobile TV service MobiTV has signed up two million new subscribers in the last six months, bringing total subscriber count to seven million, the largest subscriber based in the mobile TV industry.
Billions of minutes a year of live television and video-on-demand are streamed by the service to users on 20 different mobile networks.
“We are clearly seeing an increase in mobile television consumption,” said Charlie Nooney, MobiTV CEO.
The firm attributes the growth to its interactive content, such as the “tournament pass” application that took the March Madness app to top-seller status in the iTunes store.
MobiTV said it plans to build on the momentum gained by the rapid growth in subscriber numbers.
“We are poised to continue capitalizing on this demand with an expansive offering of compelling, entertaining TV for mobile devices,” said Paul Scanlan, MobiTV president and co-founder.
However, mobile news service GoMo believes mobile technology needs to improve to deliver high quality TV.
“The medium is hampered badly by the deficiencies of the mobile device,” GoMo said in a statement.
“The screen is too small, the networks are too slow and the data costs are too high.”
MobiTV was the world’s first company to bring live TV to mobile handsets.
