As previous reports have mentioned it seems that the government may be looking at satellite broadband services to help fill in the gaps of the UK’s broadband network, where fixed line and even mobile broadband services cannot provide a realistic service.
According to David Williams, the chief executive of Avanti, just one of the satellite broadband providers gearing up for the challenge, satellites can plug the holes left in rural areas.
In fact Avanti is due to launch a new satellite named Hylas in the later part of the year.
This satellite could provide an up to 2 Mbps broadband services to around 350,000 households.
The firm is also looking towards the Hercules satellite.
This has been approved by the European Space Agency but still requires additional funding, but when operational has the potential to provide a broadband connection of up to 50 Mbps to around 800,000 households.
