5 offers embedded TV shows

Five recently announced that viewers who want to catch up on their favorite TV shows can view past episodes or can embed full episodes into their own personal websites, simply by using the Brigthcove video player.

Later in the year Five will release its own syndicated player for TV shows, allowing anyone who owns a web page to have full access to the archives of all Five’s television shows.

The company hopes that the new initiative will spread the video content online, thus producing more advertising revenue as the player is ad supported.

Five’s digital controller, Paul Thornton Jones, stated that the player will help extend the traffic and reach of its online videos in a secure fashion, with the hopes that providing the service for free to website owners will discourage bootlegging online, since using the video platform is as simple as using YouTube video.

The television channel is also hoping to partner with powerful social networking forces such as Facebook by the close of 2009 but will introduce the Bightcove video platform beforehand, regardless of the turnout of the negotiations.

The move may help Five grow in popularity in the web world, as shows such as Neighbours will now be available in real format without any slow streaming obstacles to overcome.

As a side note, the use of the Brigthcove platform does not disable Five from partnering with television websites such as Hulu, so Five may experience a large increase in ad supported views via its new online campaign.
