New cybercrime units in every part of the country
by Alan Harten
Soon cybercrime squads could be set up to deal with crimes that are committed on the internet, similar to special investigation teams for drug cases, to counter the criticism that most police forces face for not dealing appropriately with internet crimes, even though it is suspected that over 3 million cyber crimes are committed each year.
Officials of the Association of Chief Police Officers estimate that online fraud may total up to over £50 billion per year, which calls for drastic action.
Plus, the police want to ensure that they are not behind technologically in terms of the computer gangs and that they are capable of enforcing law both on the streets and on the web.
Cyber security has become a large issue lately, as attacks are no longer targeted only at businesses or individuals.
Three London hospitals and one police force have recently been attacked.
The government is also expected to address the issue of cyber security this week with an overview of the national security strategy and the announcement of a new cyber-centre and Cabinet Office unit to deal exclusively with cyber threats.
Some highlights of the new cybercrime initiatives include training all officers on how to respond to cyber crime complaints, co-ordination between investigators and specialist, and the organization of new regional police squads that are specially trained to deal with cyber crimes.
Strategy plans were designed and will be headed by Janet Williams, the head of intelligence and covert policing at the Met Police and the lead of the Scotland Yard e-crime unit.
Efforts will also focus on creating relationships between the police and businesses that are often involved in online fraud, such as banks and other members of the finance industry.
