Hackers turn gamekeepers for UK cyber security

by Alan Harten

The Government is using computer hackers who have reformed, in order to defend Britain and help the county guard against cyber attacks and internet crime gangs, since they know the tricks of the trade.

Due to the fact that internet fraud amounts to billions of pounds annually and because of the prevalence of internet assaults on Whitehall computer systems, the ministers decided that the best plan was to fight fire with fire and mine some of the industry’s talent.

The new operations centre at the CGHQ located in Cheltenham will help control attempts to infiltrate the British computer network.

The security minister, Lord West of Spithead, admitted that some of the youngsters they have employed may have been engaged in some past schemes, but said that they are now more interested in defeating other people who have threatening motives.

Lord West did vow that the GCHQ would not employ any past hackers with too dirty a history, in order to minimize the possibility of an inner attack given the sensitive nature of the job.

The UK Government thinks that the largest threat to the national computer network comes from hackers in countries that have previously attempted to attack such as Russia and China.

The second largest threat is organized criminals who have turned to online avenues.

While Government officials stated that they do not know of any cases where information was stolen from the Government, they have stated that many large British companies have been victims of internet espionage.

In response to internet threats, the UK has set up two new organisations to focus on controlling the internet attacks – the UK Office of Cyber Security to handle policy creations and international prosecutions and the UK Cyber Security Operations Centre which will assess and collate information about threats and possible counterattacks.
