In an agreement between mobile broadband provider O2 and BT, customers of the mobile firm will be able to access BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots completely free of charge.

O2 has been building a Wi-Fi network of its own, but this deal will mean that mobile broadband users will have access to a further three thousand Wi-Fi hotspots, including those located within Starbucks coffee stores.

At the same time O2 is releasing a software upgrade to the Mobile Broadband Connection Manager which will help the customer manage and monitor data consumption.

Mobile broadband users will now be alerted as their usage allowance is used up.

They will be alerted at seventy five per cent, ninety per cent and when all of the data allowance has been used.

It is hoped that this will prevent customers going over their allowance and incurring additional charges.
