It looks as if the average UK TV viewer will be faced with retuning their digital TV receivers in order to stay in touch with changes to the spectrum, as planned by the regulator Ofcom.
According to ‘What Satellite’ Ofcom plans to create more space for pan European mobile broadband and TV services, but in the process householders will be forced to retune, possibly as many as three times.
The retunes will take place at the time of the initial digital TV switchover, when Freeview HD is introduced and at the time of the 800 MHz clearance.
The 800 MHz spectrum is important for mobile providers and manufacturers of hand held devices, as this one band will allow then to produce cheaper equipment, while at the same time the user will enjoy greater freedom.
