Virgin Media top for speed

The cable based internet service provider, Virgin Media, has topped the speed table for the month of June with an average download speed of 6.135 Mbps, according to broadband.co.uk.

Clearly the introduction of the provider’s next generation broadband has helped lift Virgin Media to the top spot, although that does not say much for the rest of the service the company provides, as there must be some areas where slow speeds are dragging the average down.

June 2009 – ISP Average Download speed (Mbps)AOL 2.143
Be and O2 5.632
BT 2.919
Eclipse 2.493
Orange 3.427
Plusnet 2.922
Sky 3.592
Talk Talk 3.482
Tiscali 2.787
Virgin Media 6.135
All providers 4.340

The UK average broadband speed for last month was 4.340 Mbps, although Be Broadband and O2 are also doing well with an average speed of 5.632, but there again the fastest broadband is only available in certain areas.
