Sophos, a security firm, announced that the United States produces the most spam on the internet, holding the country accountable for 15.6% of all the spam that was retrieved between April and June of 2009.
Roughly this means that one out of every six spam emails originated in the United States.
Following close behind the United States in the spam accountability study was Brazil with 11.1% of spam and then Turkey with 5.2%.
Last year Russia took second place on the list but has now fallen down in the chart to 3.2% which shows it is possible to reverse the effects of spam with legislation within a country.
However, the same cannot be said for Poland who climbed the chart down from tenth place up to sixth place an increase from 3.2% to 7.5% in a year.
Senior technology consultant, Graham Cluley of Sophos, stated that while US president Barack Obama has spoken out on the dangers of cyber security he should take a look into American security threats as well, as the numbers reflect there is a problem within US borders as well.
Cluley continued to say that if US citizens had cleaner computers then it would benefit global users of the net around the world as well.
In the last two months, two US ISPs, Pricewert and McColo, were shut down for spam reasons, although this is not expected to change the amount of spam produced by the United States in the long term.
