Newscorp prevented from buying Virgin Media satellite channels

July 23, 2009

The cable operator Virgin Media has been planning to sell its UK satellite TV channels and its fifty per cent share in UKTV for a while now.

However, curiously, the firm has put a clause into the sale contracts that effectively means that any business owned or connected in any way to News Corp might not be allowed to buy the channels.

This means that BSkyB, which was in fact the favourite to buy the stand alone channels of Virgin1, Bravo and Living, may not be able to buy the channels at all.

Although this clause is in the sales contract, there is some confusion over the matter, as it seems that BSkyB or another News Corp firm cannot bid for the channels, but they can deal directly with Virgin Media if they are interested.
