Carrying around a travel charger for any electric device including mobile phones, mobile televisions, and laptops, may soon be a thing of the past, with the development of a new charging system that will allow the devices to charge at home or outside without the use of a plug.

US company WiTricity reports that the new system sends electricity through the air waves without the use of wires.

It claims that the transfer can power anything from a light bulb to a computer.

Besides reducing the need for wires, if effective the system could help reduce the heavy reliance on batteries as well, with Eric Giler, the chief executive of WiTricity, stating that over 40 billion batteries are built each year.

With the new system, energy is sent through magnetic fields so that it does not interfere with human biology according to the Institute of Physics in London, which declared the technology does not harm the human body.

Marin Soljacic of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed the science that makes the system work, after waking up from sleep three nights in a row due to a low battery beep on his mobile phone.

Solijacic uses resonance to create the wireless system, which is based on the principle that if two objects have similar resonance they can exchange energy without interfering with other objects.

The WiTricity system follows suit with two magnetic coils that contain electricity exchanging power, one that is placed in a wall or ceiling, and one that is placed in the electronic device that needs recharging.

Currently the system only woks on small devices that are located no more than 2 metres away from the wall or ceiling coil.
