There has been a lot pressure on the UK’s internet service providers’ performances following the recent report from the regulator Ofcom, so the last thing they would want to see is a drop in the average UK broadband connection speed.
The drop is only slight, just 0.1 Mbps, but when you factor in the increased performance from the cable provider Virgin Media, then there should be cause for concern.
July 2009 Average speed test results
1. Virgin Media – 6.73 Mbps
2. BE/O2 – 5.31 Mbps
3. Orange – 3.41 Mbps
4. TalkTalk – 3.34 Mbps
5. Sky – 3.33 Mbps
6. BT – 2.94 Mbps
7. Plusnet – 2.81 Mbps
8. Tiscali – 2.81 Mbps
9. Eclipse – 2.58 Mbps
10. AOL – 2.21 Mbps
All providers average – 4.26 Mbps
It is clear from the table that Virgin Media is propping the average speed up, with an impressive average of 6.73 Mbps.
