A new website launched this week helps Twitter users identify and block spammers.
“TwitBlock aims to raise awareness, and hopefully educate Twitter users about how to avoid falling foul of cons and phishing traps,” founders of the service said.
TwitBlock (whoever thought up that name was truly inspired) checks your followers’ biography against spammy words, and also works out how other Twitter users treat your followers.
The service then lists your followers in descending order, with the most spammy at the top.
Presumably Twitterers with a dodgy biography and only a few followers are listed first.
You can choose to block any of the listed profiles at the click of a button.
TwitBlock’s founders confess the service is still in development phase.
“Sometimes real people and legitimate companies will display the same characteristics [as spammers],” they said.
“But we intend for the scanner to become more accurate.”
Worryingly, the company is planning to accept applications from twitterers who don’t want to be listed as a spammer.
“We intend to offer ‘whitelisting’ so companies can apply to become exempt from showing up in scans,” the founders said.
Using TwitBlock requires you to log in to the site with your Twitter username and password.
