For those who are tired of fighting the war against spam, Yahoo has announced the creation of a new email service that requires payment in order to avoid spam messages.
The new service is called CentMail and allows users to buy virtual stamps at the rate of a penny a stamp.
All of the sales profits from the stamps will then be donated to a charity of the user’s choice.
Yahoo claims that the service will not only help charities, but it will also reduce the amount of spam since the stamp will help identify messages as non-spam.
Yahoo stated that this will help recipients identify spam from non-spam since even at the cost of a penny a stamp it is too expensive for spammers to invest in.
Currently spam accounts for about 90% of all the emails that are sent in the world.
Yahoo researchers commented that they do not expect to see a wide adoption of the new stamp system, but that if enough people join the effort recipients will begin to clear stamped email allowing for further incentives for more to join.
The idea behind CentMail is that if one user begins to promote a charity users on their contact lists will be attracted to the idea as well.
The company states that the new technology is win-wn since it helps fight spam and helps various charities around the globe out.
Yahoo also points to the Facebook ‘causes’ application which has well over 20 million people who participate.
