Broadband tax could increase digital divide

According to industry experts, dropping the so called broadband tax will only add to the misery of rural broadband users, as it would increase the digital divide between the broadband services available in urban and rural areas.

The monthly tax of 50p per landline was suggested in the Digital Report, but that was put together by the then communications minister, Lord Carter.

However, there is a new man in hot seat and that often means changes.

Stephen Timms, the government’s new communications minister, has been quoted as saying that neither the Tories nor Labour is too keen on a new tax.

This throws up the implication that maybe the broadband tax will not come into force after all – so what does that mean for the broadband for all scheme?
