It may have taken around seven years for BT to crack the 500,000 Wi-Fi hotspot barrier, but it does not stop there as the company is looking to double that figure to one million Wi-Fi hotspots within the next six months.
BT has been promoting Wi-Fi for a long time by including free Wi-Fi minutes in some customers’ packages, but these minutes are no good to consumers that are unable to access them when and where they want.
Currently BT offers Wi-Fi in twelve city centres through the BT Openzone network, and there are also smaller hotspots in retail stores such as the coffee shop chain Starbucks.
Finally, there are the FON network which are mainly community based networks that, in the long term, could enable BT to have more coverage with smaller hotspots.
