Those who use Kapersky’s security software were warned last week, needlessly, that the HSBC Personal Internet banking site had malware.
The security suite warned users upon logging into the banking website that there was a HTLM-Agent_CE Trojan on the website that had been transferred to their systems.
However, Kapersky quickly caught the mistake and announced their error to users.
The company issued a statement on Friday and apologised to users for the false alarm stating that the company sees over 30,000 threats a day and sometimes one fix can present a new problem.
Other security firms stated that there was not a security threat on HSBC’s website and HSBC itself stated that their website was secure.
This is not an isolated incident as occasionally all security vendors misinterpret legitimate scripts for something that appears to be malicious in nature.
Normally in security mishaps a system file or application is mistaken for malware.
