Sky News is pitching the idea of televising an American style TV election debate, with the leaders of the political parties put on the spot in front of the electorate.
However, despite getting the support of the Conservative leader David Cameron and the Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said that it is not the time to decide whether he should join in or not.
Despite calls for this sort of debate to take place before elections it has never happened, unlike in the US where the Presidential candidates take part in several live TV debates.
Sky News has offered to organise the debate before the General Election. The channel has also offered to provide a so called empty chair should one of the leaders not turn up.
