Spotify swoops onto iPhone and Android

The streaming music service Spotify has been launched on the iPhone and Android platforms. The app will be available to premium subscribers (those paying £9.99 a month).

Not only will users be able to stream Spotify’s music catalogue of around four million tracks over WiFi or 3G, but there will also be a less battery draining offline mode in which playlists can be listened to. Apparently the offline mode can be used for up to a month before requiring syncing back online.

Some had hoped that the free version of Spotify might be made downloadable, although given that such a move would likely put a dent in iTunes sales, it’s not surprising that the service has been kept to premium subscriptions.

Those who wish to try the service, however, will be able to purchase a 24 hour pass at the cost of 99p to give it a whirl.
