Samsung Introduces Concept TV Remote

Franz Bicar

You can’t call yourself a TV addict if you don’t have this cool new device from Samsung. I know that is taking things too far but this latest remote control from Samsung takes addiction to a whole new level (and that means good). The 7-inch portable touchscreen can not only control the TV in the living room but can also check out what’s playing on channels other than the one currently showing on the big screen.

The device was introduced as a concept at this year’s IFA electronics fair in Berlin. In its most basic mode, one tab displays buttons to control the TV, while a second tab shows a TV guide application. The user can browse information about what’s on TV or watch an alternate channel on the remote control. The display is powered by dual tuners – one tuner is dedicated to the TV and another is used to tune in channels to be shown on the remote control. These are then connected through an 802.11n WiFi.

The advantage for this setup is quite obvious – your wife watches her favorite soap, while you get to watch your sports channel or scan through other shows on the remote. You get to hold the remote to show you’re in control, the wife gets to see her show, and everyone’s happy.

In addition, the third tab on the device can access basic Internet applications.

However, as mentioned, this is still a concept device. No word yet when this device becomes available or even if this device gets released to the public. But who knows? I, for one, think this is a great concept.
