In what may seem to be a surprise decision, the government is about to announce that restrictions on the placing of branded products on commercial TV are about to be lifted.
It is believed that the culture secretary, Ben Bradshaw, will make the announcement in a speech at the Royal Television Society in a few days time.
These changes will be welcome relief for the struggling commercial sector of the broadcast industry.
The restrictions will still be in place when it comes to the BBC.
Experts believe that commercial television could raise up to a £100 million from just charging top brand names for having products appear in the hand of the nation’s top soap stars.
In the past, there have been reservations about product placing because of fears for editorial independence.
