Google runs crop circles around surfers

Darren Allan

Google users in the UK awoke this morning to a mysterious logo on the site, with “Google” spelt out in crop circles and a UFO hovering overhead. Clicking on the logo simply brings up a search for “crop circles”.

This isn’t the first alien related Google front page, either, as a flying saucer appeared on the website ten days ago linking to the search “unexplained phenomena”.

Speculation is rife as to the exact meaning of these extra-terrestrial doodles, with theories that they might be a publicity stunt to promote a new movie, or perhaps Google having a bit of fun with the conspiracy theorists out there.

The Independent newspaper has come up with the most involved explanation, however, reporting that early this morning Twitter users spotted a Google tweet of co-ordinates pertaining to the town of Woking.

This is the location of the first Martian landing in “War of the Worlds”, and the theory is that all this may be the lead up to a celebration of the anniversary of HG Wells’ birth next week.

Other reports indicate there will be a third logo presented on the site which will perhaps clarify matters further.

Our theory? Google staff have been abducted by aliens and these are some form of ransom notes. We’ll know for sure if that third logo is a JPG of broken Google servers, accompanied by a demand for 3 billion galactic credits.
