An agreement between electronics firm Ubiquisys and the network of Wi-Fi hotspots run by FON could see mobile broadband users sharing their connection through the latest femtocell technology.
At the moment, the FON system works by computer users sharing their fixed line broadband connection, using a router running the firm’s software.
The software allows members of the FON community to set up their own hotspot and by doing so get access to other FON hotspots free of charge.
Those members that do not want to share their connection have to pay to access the hotspots.
Now it seems that Ubiquisys and FON are getting together to do the same thing with mobile broadband, using femtocells, small base stations that share the signal.
It is possible that this technology could provide notspots with a broadband connection.
