The UFO related doodles that have recently appeared on the Google front page have today been confirmed as a tribute to author HG Wells’ birthday, as we reported previously.
Clues were given on Twitter last week, when coinciding with the appearance of a crop circle on the website, Google tweeted co-ordinates which corresponded to the town of Woking – the location of the first Martian landing in “War of the Worlds”.
Woking is no stranger to literature, also featuring in a Douglas Adams book as a word for the phenomenon of standing in the middle of a room wondering what you came into it for.
The third and final doodle appeared this morning, showing “War of the Worlds” tripods stalking through the English countryside.
HG Wells would have been 143 years old today, although there’s a further slight mystery in why Google has chosen to celebrate that particular milestone. It’s not exactly a round number, after all, so maybe more is still to be revealed.
We can only hope all’s Wells that ends Wells…
