Details of the UK’s postcode database have been leaked onto the internet through the infamous Wikileaks website.
This particular database contains the details of all of the UK’s 1.8 million postcodes.
The information contains details of the postcodes’ exact geographical locations, which is something that the Royal Mail considers to be its ‘crown jewels’ and has guarded carefully for a long time.
The file, which was in a plain text format, contains all of the UK’s 1,841,177 postcodes, geographic information and other information, whatever that may be!
This information was last updated on the 8th July 2009.
The Royal Mail does actually sell this information under licence and has been doing so since 2007, however there have been calls for the database to be made available online, but the Royal Mail has always resisted this.
