Rail franchise ‘CrossCountry’ has released a free-to-download iPhone app called ‘Train Search’.

The app allows rail users to look up live train times and plan their journey whilst on the move.

Users have instant access to timetables showing calling points, changes and platform numbers.

A ‘current position’ feature identifies the user’s nearest railway station, and allows them to view a map of the location.

The app is available for free from the iPhone Apps Store or Itunes App Store.

Users of other phones, including Blackberrys, can download a version of the from www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk .

In the USA, researchers at the University of Utah have created three iPhone applications that can display and manipulate 3D images of medical scans.

The ‘AnatomyLab’ app lets students conduct a virtual dissection, ‘My Body’ is aimed at members of the general public who are interested in seeing what their body looks like, and ‘ImageVis3D Mobile’ creates 3-D pictures from medical, scientific and engineering images.

Back in the UK again, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has released ‘FSA Salt’, which allows users of the iPhone or iPod Touch to monitor their daily salt consumption.

The app aims to help consumers make healthy choices when they are shopping for food.
