If you think that everybody else has broadband connection, think again. Some areas are still not covered by a reliable broadband service – and some of these areas are even situated in technologically advanced countries.
So, its definitely good news when a country like Finland declared broadband Internet access as a guaranteed legal right for its citizens. I personally believe that each individual, as a citizen of a country, has legal rights to information and education. What better solution than to provide internet access to all citizens. The Finnish government took it one step further by choosing broadband connection, which is pretty much the norm in today’s society.
According to Finnish news site YLE, The Ministry of Transport and Communications says everyone in the country will be entitled to a guaranteed 1 Mbit connection by next July. But that’s not all. The government only sees this as a stepping stone towards providing each citizen 100 Mbit service guarantee by the end of 2015.
Of course, not all areas will be covered by broadband cables and lines, so its obvious that some of the connectivity will be delivered through mobile phone networks.
There are 5.3 million people residing in Finland, mostly in the south. This would place the country about 30th in the ranking of world cities by population.
