Online crime map buckles under demand

October 22, 2009

A new website put up by the Home Office, detailing every occurrence of crime in the UK, crashed just hours after being launched.

The website is nothing glamorous but what it does is allow members of the public to enter a postcode and see the crime figures for that area.

It is ideal for people looking to move, or even for businesses looking to expand.

However, initially maps.police.uk proved so popular that the site was unable to handle all of the requests that people were putting into the system.

The website appears to be working fine now, although it does appear to have some issues recognising certain postcodes.
