The end is here for Geocities
by David Allen

For many people Geocities gave them their first experience of building a web presence.
This was in the early days of the internet when information took precedence over commerce.
The countdown to the end of Geocities began some time ago, but today Yahoo is closing the domain down.
Geocities was launched back in 1995 and it fast became a popular host as it offered computer users the opportunity to have their own web space free of charge, when supported by adverts.
Yahoo provided the early backing for Geocities before eventually forking out £2.3 billion to buy the firm in 1999.
However, Yahoo has decided that it is time to shut Geocities down.
Therefore, those users still with the firm need to find an alternative fast.
